Despite her public image, Lamarr devoted much of her private life to engineering ideas. She had a sharp understanding of mechanics, physics, and communications systems – knowledge she taught herself outside the spotlight.

The Frequency-Hopping Breakthrough

During World War II, Lamarr learned that enemy forces could easily jam radio-guided torpedoes. Determined to help the Allied effort, she partnered with composer George Antheil to create a secure communication system based on rapid frequency changes – a method now known as frequency-hopping spread spectrum.
Their 1942 patent eventually became foundational for technologies used today, including:

• Secure digital communication

Lamarr’s idea was far ahead of its time and only decades later did the technology catch up with her vision.
